The Society of Homeopaths with whom I am registered and insured, explains homeopathy for us on their website (click to follow the link). I have reprinted some of this explanation below.
“Homeopathy is a system of medicine which involves treating the individual with highly diluted substances, given mainly in tablet form, with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing. Based on their specific symptoms, a homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to each patient.
Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat ‘like with like’, that is, a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation, so according to this principle, when made into a homeopathic medicine, it could be used to treat people with these symptoms. This concept is sometimes used in conventional medicine, for example, the stimulant Ritalin is used to treat patients with ADHD, or small doses of allergens such as pollen are sometimes used to de-sensitise allergic patients. However, one major difference with homeopathic medicines is that substances are used in ultra high dilutions, which makes them non-toxic.”
Homeopathy was developed over 200 years ago and it is still developing in the 21st century. More than 30 million people in Europe already use homeopathy. Modern homeopaths use the knowledge and vast clinical experience of the past together with up to date technology and research into homeopathy to benefit people. Many of the medicines are made from plants, but also from metals, minerals and other sources.
As yet, science has not been able to explain the mechanism of action of ultra high dilutions in the body, but laboratory experiments have repeatedly demonstrated that homeopathically prepared substances cause biological effects. What we understand in practice is that a homeopathic medicine, correctly selected for you as an individual, can stimulate your body to return to a healthy balance. The aim is also to stimulate changes in your state of mind and energy levels so that you can cope more easily with life's stresses.
You can consider consulting a Homeopath for any health or emotional problem, whether short term or chronic or during a special time, such as pregnancy.
When I reflect on my practice, I realise that I have provided consultations for people of all ages from tiny infants to those in extreme old age. I have also seen people with all types of health problem from minor and irritating to very serious. All of these people remained under the care of their GP and other health professionals and continued to consult with them about their conventional treatment and medication as necessary. My homeopathic consultations are designed to be complementary to and not a replacement for, conventional medical treatment.
People have presented to me with short term health problems such as chicken pox or warts, injuries, or the effects of recent stressful events. Others have wanted to discuss chronic health problems such as asthma, eczema, hay fever and other allergies, symptoms of depression or anxiety attacks, chronic fatigue syndrome, menopausal or other hormonal problems, migraines, stomach and bowel conditions, joint problems and poor resistance to infection.
Pregnant women and nursing mothers often seek homeopathic remedies because the medicine is safe and non-toxic for mother and baby and common problems such as nausea, indigestion and mastitis may be treated successfully.
Homeopathy is especially suitable for children because it is safe and without side effects. Also the remedies are easy to take and taste pleasant. All kinds of problems, from constant coughs and colds or ear infections, to behaviour problems including hyperactivity disorders, are frequently discussed by parents and children with homeopaths.
We work alongside conventional medicine and other health professionals. For example, if a bone has been broken, after conventional treatment, homeopathic medicines may speed the healing of the bone and soft tissues. On the other hand, if you are seeking to talk through and be treated for the effects of trauma or stress, your homeopath might be the first health professional that you contact.
If you are concerned about the number of courses of antibiotics or steroids that have been necessary for yourself or your family, you can consider trying homeopathy as an additional method of dealing with your health problems.
Homeopathy is gentle, safe and non toxic. It can be used in pregnancy and alongside conventional medicine. There are no side effects and homeopathy can help you regain your health and vitality.
If you are not sure if a particular condition is treatable by homeopathy, please ask.
We have included some opinions from people who have attended homeopathic consultations. These opinions appear with full consent and approval from the individuals concerned and are not intended to show evidence of clinical effectiveness.
Mrs DB
Mrs DB is in her late twenties and has two young children.
She says
"...I like homeopathy because it looks at the whole person and not just the symptom on its own. It treats you as an individual. My son had a lump on his eyelid for months and the doctors said he might need an operation to remove it. After homeopathy, it cleared up completely and did not return. My other son had a sticky eye that would not clear up when he was a small baby. This also cleared up within a week of him having the right homeopathic remedy. I like homeopathy for my children because it doesn’t have side effects, it’s safe to use and it builds on their own immune system, I feel it makes them stronger."
Mr T
Mr T was 47 when he first came for homeopathy in 2008 with a serious haematological disorder
He had been a professional athlete and is a strong and fit person. He had put his faith in his consultant and in his body to deal with the disease and he underwent all the recommended conventional treatment.
He says "...I had to have the chemotherapy and even though it is a harsh treatment, I embraced it and I believe it got me through and helped me to survive, but I wanted homeopathy to counterbalance the effects of chemo"
"...Homeopathy was the gentler side, it gave a balance. I believe that it helped me to come through the conventional treatment better, maybe even 20% better. I told people that my homeopath was the one person I could talk to about everything.’ Now fit and well and back in full time work, he is having regular checkups at the hospital. He says; ‘I can’t say what’s right for anyone else, only what I would do myself in the situation, I believe that how well I came through, is down to my level of fitness and to homeopathy. "
Miss DL Rhondda Cynon Taff
Miss DL is a student in her early twenties. She was suffering from short menstrual cycles and PMS symptoms, that were affecting her studies and her home and social life. She felt that it had ‘taken over her life’ by the time she came for a consultation. She was given one remedy a few times over the course of six months. Gradually her cycle lengthened and the PMS symptoms declined. She was able to concentrate on her work and enjoy socialising again.
